| Bible Reading 1 - John 8:32 |
FADE IN INT. JJ'S ROOM - NIGHT DISCLAIMER: This post extensively discusses Christian teachings, practices and issues. Some points may also apply to other religions. If you are not Christian, you are still welcome to read the post to gain insights or understand Christianity better. However, if you do not feel comfortable reading Christian stuff, do feel free to skip the post. I have made reasonable efforts to ensure the post does not contain inappropriate comments about other religions, but if any material is inadvertently offensive (or factually inaccurate), please inform me politely. Guess how I found my first verse? A Facebook Wall link about the World Cup! Inspiration comes from the most unlikely sources. God works in mysterious ways. Then you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free. (John 8:32) Some Bible verses have become common secular sayings, taking on new meanings. In fact, I did not know that "the truth shall set you free" came from a Bible verse, until I Googled the quote! Nowadays this quote is often used in the context of human rights (the Facebook Wall link was about North Korea) or education (especially in science). Yes, knowing the truth may help people in totalitarian regimes fight for freedom. Yes, knowing the truth through education may help young people attain freedom and independence. But that is not the type of truth the Bible verse originally meant. The freedom advocated by liberal ideology is overrated. With freedom comes responsibility! The "truth" the verse refers to is the coming and message of Jesus Christ. We are all slaves to sin, but once one knows and believes that Jesus died for our sins, one will be forgiven and cleansed. Of course, such forgiveness is not a license to sin as much as one wants. One must strive to avoid sin, with guidance from the Word of God. One must maintain faith in the faith of obstacles. The freedom advocated by liberal ideology leads to a meaningless life of sin, but freedom from the slavery of such a life is even more liberating. To love, be loved and have eternal life is wonderful. Life (and the novel Proof) has taught me that truth is subjective. Even science has its limits. To me, how true other religions are is impossible to determine. I respect other religions, for Christianity teaches us to love people of other religions and because I recognise that perhaps people of other religions could be saved through their faiths. Nevertheless, I will always accept Christianity as truth, for I believe its truth is evident in our surroundings. FADE OUT |
