DISCLAIMER: This post extensively discusses Christian teachings, practices and issues. Some points may also apply to other religions. If you are not Christian, you are still welcome to read the post to gain insights or understand Christianity better. However, if you do not feel comfortable reading Christian stuff, do feel free to skip the post. I have made reasonable efforts to ensure the post does not contain inappropriate comments about other religions, but if any material is inadvertently offensive (or factually inaccurate), please inform me politely.

My analysis of John 8:32 was thorough, but I spent too much time on it! Posts in series should be short, to prevent blogging from being too time-consuming! Now for a shorter analysis of another verse, which Clarrie mentioned in an MSN conversation.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9)

God wants us to do good. But what is doing good? Doing good could mean following the Word of God. Doing good could mean evangelising or, in my case, doing volunteer work. Doing good could simply mean studying hard and being responsible. One should do all of the above and do them not solely for the reward, but because one wants to do them. I study hard because I find Literature and Economics fascinating; excellent A-Level results are important, but secondary. I do volunteer work because I really care about the disabled and special needs communities.

If one does good with a sincere heart, one need not worry about rewards, because God will bless them and rewards will come naturally. By rewards, I do not only mean benefits to one who does good. I also mean the desired impact of doing good - for example, changing societal mindsets towards the disabled and special needs communities.

Doing good is difficult. We are surrounded by temptations, negative values and other obstacles. Instead of giving up, one should rely on God's guidance and strength. Nobody is perfect, so God will not condemn one for occasional mistakes - as long as one does good for the right reasons, one should continue to do so and have faith that the harvest will eventually come!
