FADE IN INT. JJ'S ROOM - NIGHT DISCLAIMER: This post extensively discusses Christian teachings, practices and issues. Some points may also apply to other religions. If you are not Christian, you are still welcome to read the post to gain insights or understand Christianity better. However, if you do not feel comfortable reading Christian stuff, do feel free to skip the post. I have made reasonable efforts to ensure the post does not contain inappropriate comments about other religions, but if any material is inadvertently offensive (or factually inaccurate), please inform me politely. Intensive preparations for 13 July have started! So has work on my Project 8 Speech. JJ is really pissed with several people, but thankfully this verse came to mind: Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. (Matthew 5:39) Like John 8:32, this verse has become a famous quote, frequently used in a secular context, but its meaning has not been lost. If everyone followed the principle "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth", who would benefit? Eye surgeons and companies selling dentures. So we should not respond to evil with evil. For example, when schoolmates bully me, I should not retaliate. In fact, I should strive to not hate or condemn them, for God will condemn them. God wants world peace. God wants us to love everyone, even our enemies. Doing so is very difficult, because God is perfect and we are not, but that should not stop us from trying. Perhaps I should pray for those bullies, for bullies tend to be people who are plagued by problems. Why should I sink to their level? But does Jesus really want us to respond to evil by inviting further evil? Why would he want me to tell a bully to "go ahead and beat me up"? Perhaps we should interpret this verse in the context of the times Jesus lived in and the culture then (see this well-sourced Wikipedia article for more information). FADE OUT |
